How to Write Your Online Dating Profile by Brandon Grittini

Did you think about posting a picture from ten years ago when you looked amazing in your bikini and weighed thirty pounds less than you do now? Have you considered lying about your age, interests, or career when typing your online dating profile? The competition on these websites drives some people to resort to lying.

The problem with lying on dating websites is that you're trying to meet someone who you could spend your life with. This is not the way to begin a strong, trustworthy relationship with someone. If you post an old picture or lie about your appearance, how will you meet in person? Are you going to tell your date that you suddenly aged ten years? Don't put yourself in that predicament. Be honest with yourself and others when you write your online dating profile.

Follow these tips and you won't have to lie:

1. Take time to think of a creative tag line. This is the first thing that most people notice when they click on your profile. It's a one line phrase that is displayed at the top of online dating profiles next to your picture. Many people use famous quotes or movie lines. Browse through the dating website to see what other people have posted. If you see ten people with the same movie quote, don't use it. Come up with something creative that will catch someone's attention. Don't resort to using cliches.

1. Avoid negative statements about yourself. This profile isn't a life history. You don't have to include everything about yourself. Here are a few examples:

1. Instead of writing, "I lost my job two days ago due to the economy," write, "I have a history of working in the banking industry."

2. Instead of writing, "I'm lonely, so I have five cats," write, "I love animals and enjoy the company of my pets."

3. Make your profile unique. Don't write statements that everyone else writes on their profiles.
Instead of writing, "I really enjoy watching movies" write, "Tom Cruise's character in Top Gun is one reason that I love movies. My top picks for a rainy day are The Godfather, Braveheart, and Shrek."

Instead of writing, "My interests are music and cooking," write, "I've attended five concerts in the past year, and my favorite was seeing Celine Dion for the third time. My CD collection ranges from classical music to country with everything in between. My family recipe for chocolate chip cookies has been passed down through five generations and I enjoy whipping them up on Sunday afternoons for friends and neighbors."

4. Include a picture. Make sure that your picture is clear and accurate. Enhance your best qualities by making sure that they are on display in your photograph. If you think that your eyes are your best quality, include a head shot. Don't use pictures that make you look different than you look in person, because you might want to meet some of these people.

5. Think about the people that you're trying to attract. When you write your online dating profile, you should think about the type of people that you want to date. Are you looking for a fling or a long-term relationship? Consider this before writing your profile and aim it toward that type of relationship.

6. Don't include too much information. Take out a sheet of paper and brainstorm things you could include on your dating profile such as interests, hobbies, family, and career. Choose the top three that seem the most interesting to begin your profile. Brainstorm creative ways that you can write about these things.

7. Use simple text. Don't try to make your profile stand out by typing your text in bold, capital letters, or italics. It will be hard to read, and it could turn people off before they even begin reading.

8. Use everyday language. If you wouldn't say insuppressible, quixotic, or grandiloquent, don't write it in your profile. Don't look up large words in your thesaurus to make yourself sound more intelligent. It will make you seem like a pompous person that is trying too hard.

Be yourself. People will want to meet you for who you are, because you're unique and interesting. If you focus on your best qualities and avoid mentioning your worst qualities, you're on the right track. Follow the tips above to write a standout online dating profile.
